Synopsis
German commander Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell) places a squad in extreme danger after Sergeant Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) refuses to lie for him.
It is 1943, and the German army—ravaged and demoralised—is hastily retreating from the Russian front. In the midst of the madness, conflict brews between the aristocratic yet ultimately pusillanimous Captain Stransky and the courageous Corporal Steiner. Stransky is the only man who believes that the Third Reich is still vastly superior to the Russian army. However, within his pompous persona lies a quivering coward who longs for the Iron Cross so that he can return to Berlin a hero. Steiner, on the other hand is cynical, defiantly non-conformist and more concerned with the safety of his own men rather than the horde of military decorations offered to him by his superiors.เนื้อเรื่องโดยสังเขปอาศัยฉากสงครามระหว่างเยอรมันกับรัสเซียในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ในปี 1943 (พ.ศ.2486) บริเวณแหลมทามาน แถบคาบสมุทรไครเมีย (the Taman Peninsula in the Crimea) เรื่องเริ่มขึ้นเมื่อพระเอกของเรื่อง คือ สิบโทสไตเนอร์ (Corporal Rolf Steiner ในซาวด์แทร็คกลับออกเสียงเป็น “สไตน่า”) นำกำลังออกลาดตระเวณ และทำลายที่ตั้งปืนครกของข้าศึก และจับเชลยทหารเด็กกลับมายังฐานทัพ ในเวลาเดียวกับที่ร้อยเอกสทรานสกี้ (Captain Stransky) พึ่งเดินทางจากปารีสมารับตำแหน่งผู้บังคับกองร้อยที่สไตเนอร์สังกัดอยู่ ด้วยจุดประสงค์ที่จะหาโอกาสสร้างความชอบเพื่อให้ได้รับเหรียญกล้าหาญกางเขนเหล็กกลับไปอวดครอบครัวซึ่งเป็นตระกูลผู้ดีเก่า สทรานสกี้กับสไตเนอร์เจอหน้ากันครั้งแรกก็เกิดอาการศรศิลป์ไม่กินกัน เนื่องจากสไตเนอร์ขัดใจผู้กองทั้งในเรื่องไม่ยอมยิงเชลยเด็กทิ้ง และรายงานผลการลาดตระเวณด้วยน้ำเสียงห้วนๆ และเย็นชา ไม่ยินดียินร้ายกับการได้เลื่อนยศเป็นสิบเอก
